Know It All?
Legendary Hall of fame basketball coach John Wooden said, “A leader who is through learning is through. And so is the team such a leader leads. It’s what you learn after you know it all that counts.”
Wow. “It’s what you learn after you know it all that counts.” You and I are not “know it alls!” Are we? I never intend to be. But what I’ve realized is that if I don’t intentionally put myself in places to learn and in a posture to learn – I’m living as if I know it all.
The problem then is no longer mine. My lack of growth is limiting my spouse, my daughter, my children in the faith, everyone I lead, and every team I am on. No man is an island! Guys, our decisions, impact those we love in ways we often fail to realize.
Learner Or Loser?
I know that, like me, you never want to be a hindrance to those you love. Our desire is to be a blessing. We long to enable those we lead to be winners! IF THIS IS YOUR HEART, and I believe it is, MAKE A FRESH DECISION TODAY TO BE A LIFETIME LEARNER.
Learning is never convenient or cheap! It always cost. But the price we personally pay and make others pay when we refuse to be learners is far greater.
Ecclesiastes 10:10 contains a life-changing principle for those who will embrace it: “If the ax is dull, and one does not sharpen the edge, then he must use more strength: But wisdom brings success.”
In other words, when we invest time to learn and get sharp we make our workload lighter and our life easier. Sure it cost us to sharpen the ax but if we will pay the price on the front end, it makes our work lighter on the back end.
So, my friend, I encourage you to be a learner – for the rest of your life! Be intentional. Read, listen, study, show up and keep showing up. Go out of your way to better yourself. Invest the time, and money to become the man God created you to be.
